A Simple Gesture Does Big Things in the Greensboro Area
Updated: Feb 22
"For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me." - Matthew 25:35
Our Mission Ministry Team at Oak Ridge Presbyterian Church works in several, not always seen, impactful ways in our community. One of them is to promote A Simple Gesture and encourage our congregation to donate and volunteer to this wonderful program that helps get food to the neediest among us in our local communities.
A Simple Gesture started in California. Jonathan Trivers felt that there was enough food in his town of Paradise to feed everyone. He had a problem though? How do you get that food to the neediest people in his community? He and his wife started A Simple Gesture and came up with a system of collecting food from volunteers and getting it to those that need it most.
Bob Biggerstaff started A Simple Gesture - Greensboro in 2015 and formatted its system of distributing food to those that need it most in our community from the template that Jonathan Trivers and his wife created.
A Simple Gesture in Greensboro states that its 3 main goals are:
To provide a regular supply of food to our hungry neighbors
To create new neighborhood connections and strengthen our community
To serve as a model for other communities.
Oak Ridge Presbyterian Church is proud that many members of our congregation donate their resources by filling up a Green Bag for pickup.
We have volunteers in our Church, like Laura Reneer, Beth Cameron, Diane Grimes, and Lesley Burnham. that contribute their time and talents by picking up donation bags and getting them to sorting centers. These sorting centers pass the food on to local food pantries the same day. So, from your front door in the morning to the local food pantries in the afternoon. A Simple Gesture is amazingly efficient and rewarding organization for which to volunteer.
This is one of the ways our Mission Ministry Team offers the members of the congregation at Oak Ridge Presbyterian Church a way to be the hands and feet of Jesus and to serve our neighbors, To Laura and David Reneer, Diane Grimes, Beth Cameron, Lesley Burnham and the many others who offer their time and resources to A Simple Gesture, thank you and great job!
